Energy Balancing & Meditation 101

Are you an empath, aka energy sponge, who feels "wonky", gets cranky or gets actual hives from being in crowds or around certain people? Or maybe just a "normal" person who is ready to dump any lingering crusty energy and start the New Year feeling lighter and better in general without counting calories or dusting off your scale? As a medium and empath, I am in the business of opening my energy field to the energy of others on both sides of the veil, alas (in the interest of saving my own sanity), I have had to learn how to recognize whether a sudden burst of euphoria or mini meltdown is my own or attached to the person coming for a 10am reading. What follows is a quick DIY guide to raising and managing your energy daily, with the added benefit of becoming more connected to Spirit. This "cheat sheet" is based on what I have learned from my own Spirit Guides during my daily morning meditation, as well as wisdom garnered from countless books that I have read on the subject. If any of this resonates with you, or if you have no explanation for why you are feeling cruddy in general, read on... Can't hurt, might help, right?

To begin with, I highly recommend reading my new book, Madame Medium: Unleash Your Inner Psychic with a French Teacher Turned Psychic Medium, available on Amazon.com.

In the meantime (whether or not you choose to start or finish my book), here are some habits that should help anyone who struggles with balancing their energy and/or separating their own energy from that of of everyone they come in contact with, especially those of us who know we are empaths. These simple practices are meant to enhance your daily life, not consume it, so feel free to hang on to whatever parts work for you and dump any that feel a bit extra.

GRATITUDE & MEDITATION: MORNING and/or NIGHTLY
(I’m a morning person, but you should choose what works best for you based on your natural biorhythms and do them at night if you are a night owl)

  • Start and/or end each day with an attitude of gratitude… try to write down at least 5 things that you are grateful for each morning (even if it’s just a bed, a roof, running water, coffee & the fact that you are breathing!?)  I generally write them down in the morning and then choose another five to say to myself at night before I go to sleep, but once a day is way better than not at all!
  • Meditate for at least 15 minutes. I recommend 30 minutes or more but, once again, doing something is 100 times better than doing nothing, so carve out whatever time you can. Meditation looks different for everyone, but if you are a beginner and need a place to start, here’s what I do daily: Beth's Basic Meditation

ENERGY SHIELD: BEFORE WORK/SCHOOL
(or anytime you know you’ll be around a crowd of potentially crazy, or negative people)

Envision a shield of white light encasing your body like a suit of armor that is able to protect you from any negative energy. You can also rub your hands together (create an energy ball) and create a positive energy shield around you for the day. It may sound kooky, but better safe than sorry, am I right? You can read more about this and other ways of combating “energy suckers” in my book, Madame Medium: Unleash Your Inner Psychic with a French Teacher Turned Psychic Medium, available soon on Amazon.com.

RECLAIM YOUR ENERGY: AFTER WORK/SCHOOL
(on your way home in the car, as soon as you get home)

  1. Imagine all of the people you came into contact with/used your energy on that day, especially those who have drained your energy rather than boosting it.
  2. Open your heart chakra (for now, just imagine a blooming pink rose in the center of your chest), mentally send positive vibes (in the form of hearts, a rainbow, magical sparkly dust or rose petals - whatever works!) to that group of people you just imagined.
  3. Picture that energy coming back out of the tops of their heads, “cycling” through the clouds high above (like a heavenly rinse cycle), and then re-entering your body as fresh, clean energy through the crown of your head.

DAILY GROUNDING (Dump old energy & recharge): END OF THE DAY

  1. Take your shoes off & lay down (or stand) in the grass with a citrine crystal (found in any new age store or on amazon) on your center. If it’s too wet or cold, or you wnat to save money, do this inside while holding an actual basic a** rock that you bring from inside.
  2. Imagine a magical white light from the clouds (the kind that looks like the heavens have opened and beamed down upon you). Imagine that light creating a cocoon around your whole body. Imagine your feet growing roots & connecting you to the ground. Imagine a golden cord connecting you from your root chakra (red ball of energy at the base of your spine) to the ground, like an anchor forming out of the white light surrounding you.
  3. Take 3-4 deep breaths. Each time you breathe in, imagine white sparkly plus signs (positive energy) entering your entire body.  Each time you exhale, imagine grey minus signs (negative energy) leaving your body through that golden cord & going into the earth where it is neutralized.
  4. If you have any persistent negative thoughts (a worry or a person that is on your last nerve), imagine them in a thought bubble, pop that bubble & watch as the “ashes” of that thought exits through your golden cord.

SUPER DELUXE GROUNDING (major dump & recharge): ONCE A WEEK
(or whenever you feel especially "heavy" or cruddy)

Follow this link to an AMAZING grounding cord meditation recorded by Carly Ptak, a wonderful hypnotherapist who offers a lot of really great energy-related services. You will literally feel 10 lbs. “lighter” (like a weight has been lifted) after this guided meditation! FYI, my husband and I have both had past life regressions done by Carly... definitely a bucket list worthy experience! http://www.integrationhypnotherapy.com/pastliferegression.htm

NIGHTLY REFLECTION/ENERGY PROTECTION: BEFORE BED

Pray to whomever/whatever you believe in for protection and help resting throughout the night. Don’t forget to thank them/the universe for the day you just had… I even give thanks for any challenges I may have experienced because I know they were meant to teach me something!

OPTIONAL HOME ENERGY CLEANSE
(if you just can't shake the negative energy or it feels like it is surrounding you when you walk in the door of your own home)

  • I “cleanse” our house daily with an incense stick (frankincense & myrrh is my fave - and my husband says sage makes our house smell like a sausage factory - but any incense or sage flavor that you like is fine).  You might just want to sage or “incense” on days when you feel the energy in your place feels “heavy”. Open the window a crack if possible when doing this to release the “crusty” energy.

RECAP

Whether you choose to begin doing one, a few or all of the suggested energy-related activities that I shared, I'm willing to bet that you feel the difference almost immediately as I did. Diet and exercise certainly help us to feel lighter physically... however if, like me, you want to start feeling better without giving up red wine and pizza rolls (or whatever happens to be your poison of choice), becoming more aware of the effect that the intangible energy surrounding you may be having on your mental and emotional health will help you to put a finger on why you aren't "feeling yourself". Once you recognize what (or who) may be draining you of energy, the better you will get at managing your energy field and tuning out any energy that may be distracting or wearing you down. It's a bit like adjusting the radio when the station gets staticky... the better able you are to control the dial, the less funky or "staticky" your personal station will feel!
